Renewable Energy in North Carolina

On August 20, 2007 the North Carolina General Assembly officially adopted Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standards (REPS) with the signing of Senate Bill 3.  This legislation created an energy mandate for all public and private electric utility providers in North Carolina.  SB 3 requires all investor-owned utilities, such as Duke Energy, and electric membership corporations, such as Surry-Yadkin EMC, to purchase renewable energy to help meet our members' needs.

Surry-Yadkin Electric could meet this requirement by taking a few different measures:

1) Increase purchases of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECS) that come from generation sources such as solar, wind, poultry, and swine waste.

2). Conserving energy helps reduce the amount of non-renewable energy we must purchase for our members.  Therefore, Surry-Yadkin EMC is currently offering a rebate incentive to members who install a new, 15 SEER or greater heat pump unit.  The unit's Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) estimates how much energy can be conserved by installing the unit, which then determines the amount you will receive from your rebate.  In addition to our Heat Pump Rebate Program, we are also in the process of replacing many mercury vapor and high pressure sodium security lights with LED fixtures.  By taking these measures to conserve energy, Surry-Yadkin Electric is able to claim energy efficiency credits (EECs) that also help us meet the requirements under NC Senate Bill 3.

***SYEMC's current strategy in meeting this requirement is to combine clean, renewable energy purchases with popular energy efficiency incentive programs for a balanced approach to serving our members.

The staff and management of Surry-Yadkin EMC share many of our members' concerns when discussing the environmental impacts of generating electricity. While renewable energy has many environmental benefits, it also poses an economic challenge.  In addition to being a more expensive source of energy, there are also many concerns regarding its reliability in helping us meet our members' energy needs. Regardless of whether the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, SYEMC will be there for you throughout your day.
